Job Description
This role calls for a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join one of our esteemed industrial clients within the vibrant industrial estate of Old Harbour Bay, Old Harbour. As a critical member of the operational team, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs that align with local regulations, international standards, and company policies. Your expertise will safeguard our most valuable asset – our people – and protect our operational integrity.
The industrial environment presents unique challenges and opportunities, requiring a professional who is not only knowledgeable in H&S protocols but also adept at practical application, risk assessment, and fostering a proactive safety culture. You will be responsible for conducting thorough site inspections, identifying potential hazards, and developing effective control measures. This includes everything from machinery safety to chemical handling, fire prevention, and emergency preparedness. Beyond compliance, this position involves significant interaction with all levels of staff, from management to frontline workers. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health and safety management systems and programs in line with Jamaican OSH regulations and international best practices.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across the industrial estate to identify potential risks and implement corrective actions.
- Lead and conduct thorough incident investigations, including root cause analysis, and recommend effective preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
- Organize and deliver engaging safety training sessions for all employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring awareness and compliance with H&S policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, standards, and internal company policies.
- Manage the permit-to-work system for high-risk activities, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans and conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness for various scenarios.
- Maintain accurate records of all safety-related activities, incidents, inspections, and training, generating reports for management.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and leadership, encouraging active participation from all staff.
- Advise management on new or updated H&S legislation and best practices, ensuring continuous improvement.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations in Jamaica (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA principles).
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, CSP, ASP).
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems).
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience in the specific industrial sector (e.g., logistics, heavy manufacturing, processing).
