Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to lead and manage comprehensive safety programs within a prominent industrial estate in Montego Bay, St. James. This professional role is critical to ensuring a safe, healthy, and compliant working environment for all personnel and operations within the estate. The successful candidate will be a proactive advocate for safety, possessing a deep understanding of industrial hazards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.

As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring safety policies and procedures that align with local regulations and international standards. Your daily responsibilities will span across risk assessment, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, and the continuous improvement of safety performance. You will be expected to conduct regular site inspections, identify potential hazards, and implement corrective actions promptly. Furthermore, you will play a key role in fostering a strong safety culture through engaging training programs and clear communication channels, ensuring all employees are aware of and adhere to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national regulations (e.g., OSHA Jamaica) and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular and thorough site inspections, audits, and risk assessments within the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Design and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all levels of employees, fostering a strong safety-conscious culture.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all environmental regulations relevant to industrial operations.
  • Prepare detailed safety reports, analyses, and presentations for management, highlighting key performance indicators and areas for improvement.
  • Lead emergency response planning, drills, and crisis management efforts within the estate.
  • Collaborate with contractors, tenants, and other stakeholders to ensure adherence to safety standards and integrated safety management.
  • Manage the procurement and maintenance of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Stay abreast of new legislation, industry standards, and emerging best practices in occupational health and safety.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in occupational health and safety management, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican H&S regulations and international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Strong ability to conduct risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective safety training.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
  • Professional membership with a recognized H&S body.
  • Experience with environmental management systems.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English and Spanish) is a plus.
