Job Description

Are you a seasoned Health & Safety professional with a passion for creating and maintaining secure industrial environments? Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to oversee our partner industrial estate in Thompson Town, Clarendon. This is a critical role that demands proactive leadership, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep understanding of occupational health and safety regulations, both local and international best practices. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs, ensuring compliance, and fostering a robust safety culture across the entire estate. The successful candidate will be a guardian of well-being, committed to protecting employees, contractors, and visitors from potential hazards, while also safeguarding company assets and reputation.

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the industrial estate operates in full adherence to all relevant health and safety legislation and internal policies. This involves conducting regular risk assessments, implementing preventative measures, and continuously evaluating the effectiveness of safety protocols. You will be a key advisor to management and staff on all H&S matters, providing expert guidance and training to promote a proactive approach to safety. We are looking for an individual who can not only identify potential risks but also develop innovative solutions to mitigate them, driving continuous improvement in our safety performance. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies, procedures, and programs in line with local regulations and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to management and employees on occupational health and safety matters.
  • Organise and deliver H&S training sessions, inductions, and workshops for all staff and contractors.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant environmental health and safety legislation and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare and present detailed H&S reports, performance metrics, and compliance documentation to management.
  • Manage and coordinate emergency response procedures, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation plans.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through communication campaigns, safety committees, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Jamaican occupational health and safety regulations and relevant international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering safety training programs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional safety certification.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
