Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and proactive Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within our vibrant industrial estate in Junction, St. Elizabeth. This professional role is critical to maintaining a secure and compliant work environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors across diverse operational units within the estate. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety management systems that align with national regulations and international best practices. You will be responsible for identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and formulating effective mitigation strategies to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses. This position requires a strong leader who can not only ensure compliance but also foster a robust safety culture through engaging training programs and continuous improvement initiatives. You will act as a key advisor to management and staff on all health and safety matters, ensuring that all activities are conducted safely and efficiently. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, and management systems in accordance with local regulations and international standards.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Organize and deliver comprehensive health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, covering topics such as emergency procedures, safe work practices, and hazard communication.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant occupational health and safety legislation, including OSHA standards and Jamaican Labour Laws.
- Manage the implementation and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials within the estate.
- Advise management on health and safety performance, trends, and the necessity for improvements or changes.
- Promote a positive safety culture throughout the organization through communication, engagement, and visible leadership.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and other relevant documentation.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, local labour laws).
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, hazard identification, and incident investigation techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence employees at all levels.
- Proficiency in developing and delivering safety training programs.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional safety certification.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Familiarity with industrial machinery and equipment safety protocols.
