Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our team, dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of safety within a prominent industrial estate in Denham Town, Kingston. This professional role is critical in driving our commitment to a zero-incident culture, protecting our employees, visitors, and assets, and maintaining full compliance with local and international occupational health and safety regulations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial environment. This includes conducting regular risk assessments, developing safe work procedures, facilitating safety training sessions, and investigating incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. You will serve as the primary point of contact for all H&S matters on the estate, working collaboratively with various stakeholders, including tenants, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
This position requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of industrial safety protocols, hazard identification, and risk mitigation strategies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor robust Health & Safety policies and procedures in alignment with local regulations and international best practices.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees, contractors, and new hires, covering topics such as emergency response, hazardous materials handling, fire safety, and ergonomics.
- Ensure all safety documentation, records, and reports are meticulously maintained and submitted as required by regulatory bodies.
- Manage the implementation and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and first aid provisions.
- Advise management and tenants on H&S compliance requirements, new legislation, and strategies for continuous improvement.
- Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.
- Promote a strong safety culture through regular communication, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Collaborate with external regulatory agencies during inspections and ensure all recommendations are addressed promptly.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 4 years of proven experience as an H&S Officer, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or estate management environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OHS regulations and international safety standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, hazard analyses, and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with all levels of staff and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Experience in training and developing safety programs.
- Working knowledge of industrial machinery and processes.
