Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join a leading industrial estate in Seville, St. Ann’s Bay. This professional role is critical in ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all personnel, visitors, and contractors within a complex industrial environment. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures that comply with local regulations and international best practices. You will be the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, conducting regular inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions. This role demands a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to effectively communicate safety requirements across all levels of the organization. You will be responsible for fostering a positive safety culture, providing engaging training sessions, and promoting continuous improvement in occupational health and safety performance. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and review Health and Safety policies, procedures, and Safe Systems of Work in line with Jamaican legislation and industry standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and assess risks within the industrial estate.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending preventative measures.
  • Provide comprehensive health and safety training to employees, contractors, and visitors, including inductions, emergency procedures, and specific task-related safety.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) acts, regulations, and industry guidelines applicable in Jamaica.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and corrective actions.
  • Advise management on health and safety best practices and changes in legislation.
  • Prepare and submit periodic safety reports to management, highlighting key performance indicators and areas for improvement.
  • Coordinate and participate in emergency preparedness and response drills.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns and active engagement with staff at all levels.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment (minimum 4 years).
  • Thorough knowledge of Jamaican OSH legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrable experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Recognized H&S certification (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH or equivalent local certifications).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related technical field.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • Knowledge of fire safety management and emergency response planning.
