Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join a prominent industrial estate in Mineral Heights, May Pen. This professional role is critical in ensuring a safe and compliant working environment for all personnel and operations within the estate. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring occupational health and safety programs, policies, and procedures in strict accordance with national regulations and international best practices. You will serve as the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, conducting regular site inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations to identify hazards and implement corrective actions. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong commitment to fostering a culture of safety, capable of providing expert advice, training, and support to management and employees alike. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health and safety (OHS) programs, policies, and procedures in line with Jamaican OHS regulations and international standards.
- Conduct regular and thorough site inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Prepare and deliver engaging safety training programs and workshops for all levels of staff, promoting a strong safety culture.
- Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and readily available for use.
- Keep abreast of changes in OHS legislation and industry best practices, updating policies and procedures as necessary.
- Advise management on health and safety matters, including regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement strategies.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training, incidents, and investigations.
- Collaborate with emergency services and internal teams to develop and test emergency response plans.
- Monitor environmental compliance related to industrial operations and ensure adherence to relevant regulations.
- Lead safety committee meetings and foster active participation from employees.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican occupational health and safety legislation and regulations.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control principles.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
