Job Description

Are you an experienced and highly motivated Web Engineer eager to leverage your skills in a remote-first, impactful role? Utilita Energy is seeking a talented Home-Based Web Engineer to bolster our innovative digital team. In this critical position, you will be a key player in the full lifecycle development, from conceptualisation and design to deployment and ongoing maintenance, of our core web applications and customer-facing platforms. These systems serve a vast user base across the UK, providing essential tools for energy management and interaction. Working autonomously from your home office, you will integrate seamlessly with cross-functional teams comprising product managers, UX/UI designers, and fellow engineers. Your expertise will be crucial in translating complex business requirements into robust, scalable, and secure web solutions, utilising modern frameworks and development methodologies. We are looking for a proactive individual with a deep understanding of frontend and/or backend web technologies, a strong commitment to clean, testable code, and a passion for staying abreast of industry best practices. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, scalable, and secure web applications using modern web technologies.
  • Collaborate with product owners, UX/UI designers, and other engineers to define, design, and ship new features.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code following best practices and architectural patterns.
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality, adherence to standards, and knowledge sharing.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve software defects and performance issues.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our development processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Ensure applications are optimised for maximum speed, scalability, and security.
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging web technologies and industry trends to inform our technical roadmap.
  • Actively participate in agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives).
  • Mentor junior team members and share knowledge across the engineering team.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, and CSS3.
  • Extensive experience with at least one modern frontend framework (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js).
  • Strong understanding of backend development with Node.js, Python, or a similar language.
  • Experience with relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) or NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB).
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
  • Solid understanding of version control systems, particularly Git.
  • Experience with testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress) and TDD/BDD principles.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
