Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily watering, fertilizing, and pruning of a diverse range of plants according to their specific needs and seasonal requirements.
- Monitor plant health diligently, accurately identify common pests and diseases, and apply appropriate organic or chemical treatments under supervision.
- Assist with all aspects of potting, repotting, and transplanting various plant species, ensuring optimal growth conditions.
- Prepare specialized soil mixes and actively participate in the propagation of new plants from seeds, cuttings, or divisions.
- Maintain impeccable cleanliness and organization throughout the nursery, including sweeping, tidying plant displays, and ensuring a safe and hazard-free working environment.
- Engage with customers in a friendly and knowledgeable manner, assisting them with plant selection, providing detailed care advice, and handling sales transactions as required.
- Receive and unload plant deliveries efficiently, ensuring proper placement, inventory labeling, and minimizing plant stress.
- Creatively set up and maintain attractive and engaging plant displays to enhance visual appeal and stimulate sales.
- Safely operate and maintain basic nursery equipment and tools, including watering systems, hand tools, and small machinery.
- Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment through effective communication and mutual support of colleagues.
Required Skills
- Proven practical experience in plant care, gardening, or commercial nursery operations.
- Fundamental knowledge of various plant species, their specific care requirements, and common horticultural challenges.
- Physical capability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting heavy bags of soil, bending, kneeling, and standing for prolonged periods.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a keen observational eye for assessing plant health and identifying issues.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, particularly for engaging effectively with customers.
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a strong, proactive work ethic.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively both independently and as an integrated part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Certificate or Diploma in Horticulture, Agriculture, or a closely related field.
- Previous experience specifically gained within a retail plant nursery or garden center environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of local Kenyan flora, indigenous plants, and their cultivation.
- Proficiency in operating M-Pesa and basic point-of-sale (POS) systems for customer transactions.
- Valid first aid certification is an added advantage.
