Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa, a prestigious five-star resort nestled on the pristine beaches of Pwani Mchangani, Zanzibar North, is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic HVAC Maintenance Helper to join our exceptional Engineering team. As an HVAC Maintenance Helper, you will play a crucial supporting role in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout our expansive property. You will work closely under the guidance of experienced HVAC technicians and engineers, gaining valuable hands-on experience and developing your skills in a practical setting. Your daily tasks will be diverse, ranging from assisting with routine preventative maintenance checks to responding to urgent repair calls, always with a focus on efficiency, safety, and guest comfort. This role is integral to maintaining the optimal environmental conditions across guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities, directly impacting our guests’ experience. You’ll be instrumental in ensuring that our air conditioning units, refrigeration systems, and ventilation equipment operate flawlessly, providing a cool and comfortable oasis amidst Zanzibar’s tropical climate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist skilled HVAC technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various HVAC systems, including split units, chillers, and refrigeration units.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks such as cleaning coils, replacing air filters, checking refrigerant levels, and lubricating moving parts.
  • Transport tools, equipment, and materials to and from job sites efficiently and safely within the resort premises.
  • Help troubleshoot minor HVAC issues and diagnose basic faults under the supervision of senior technicians.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, ensuring all tools are properly stored and equipment is well-maintained after use.
  • Adhere strictly to all resort safety protocols and procedures, especially when working with electrical components, refrigerants, and at heights.
  • Document maintenance activities, log completed tasks, and promptly report any defects, unusual noises, or potential issues to the engineering supervisor.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and guest service calls related to HVAC issues as directed by the engineering department.
  • Support general engineering and maintenance tasks as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a collaborative team spirit.
  • Engage actively in continuous learning opportunities to expand knowledge of HVAC systems, resort specific equipment, and industry best practices.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical principles
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 25kg, bending, climbing ladders, and working in various weather conditions
  • Strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to learn new skills and adapt to new challenges
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, in English and/or Swahili
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a diverse team
  • A positive attitude, reliability, punctuality, and a strong commitment to guest satisfaction
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and power tools commonly used in maintenance work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a maintenance or helper role, particularly within a hotel, resort, or similar commercial environment
  • Vocational training, technical certification, or coursework in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical fields
  • Basic understanding of safety procedures related to maintenance work and lockout/tagout protocols
  • Ability to read and interpret simple technical diagrams or schematics
