Job Description

Career.zycto is actively seeking an experienced and meticulous Hydrographic Surveyor to join a pioneering team based in the vibrant Barmbek district of Hamburg. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to critical projects that shape our understanding of marine environments, support infrastructure development, and ensure safe navigation. As a Hydrographic Surveyor, you will be instrumental in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of hydrographic data using state-of-the-art equipment and methodologies. You will play a vital role in field operations, often involving work on vessels and challenging coastal or offshore conditions, ensuring data integrity and project success from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and supervise hydrographic surveys using multibeam echosounders, single-beam echosounders, side-scan sonar, magnetometers, and other survey instruments.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of survey equipment, including GPS/GNSS systems, tide gauges, current meters, and data acquisition software.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret hydrographic data to produce accurate bathymetric charts, seafloor maps, and survey reports.
  • Ensure the quality control and assurance of all acquired data, identifying and rectifying any anomalies or errors.
  • Prepare comprehensive survey reports, including methodologies, results, and recommendations, adhering to IHO standards and client specifications.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot survey equipment, ensuring optimal performance and data reliability.
  • Participate in offshore and nearshore field operations, potentially involving extended periods at sea or on remote sites.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, geologists, and other team members to define project scopes and deliverables.
  • Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols and regulations during all survey operations.
  • Support the development of new survey techniques and technologies to enhance operational efficiency and data quality.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior surveyors or field assistants as needed.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Hydrographic Surveying, Geomatics, Oceanography, Marine Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as a Hydrographic Surveyor in marine, offshore, or coastal environments.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting modern hydrographic survey equipment (e.g., multibeam echosounders, GPS/GNSS, RTK, INS).
  • Expertise in hydrographic data acquisition and processing software (e.g., Hypack, QPS QINSy/Qimera, CARIS HIPS and SIPS, EIVA NaviSuite).
  • Strong understanding of international hydrographic standards (e.g., IHO S-44) and relevant industry regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate and detailed survey reports and charts.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken); German language skills are a significant advantage.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for field assignments, including offshore work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant discipline.
  • IHO Category A or B certification in Hydrographic Surveying.
  • Experience with advanced geophysical survey techniques (e.g., sub-bottom profiling, marine magnetometry).
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for data integration and visualization.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB for data analysis automation.
  • Experience with offshore construction support surveys or dredging projects.
