Job Description

PriceSmart Jamaica is seeking a dedicated and meticulous Part-Time Import Operations Clerk to join our dynamic team at the Cumberland, Portmore location. This pivotal role is essential for ensuring the seamless flow of goods from our international suppliers to our warehouse shelves, directly impacting our ability to provide exceptional value to our members. As an Import Operations Clerk, you will be instrumental in managing the logistical aspects of our incoming merchandise, from comprehensive documentation processing to efficient customs clearance coordination. You will work closely with various internal departments and external partners, including customs brokers, freight forwarders, and shipping agents, to ensure the timely and compliant receipt of goods.

The Part-Time Import Operations Clerk at PriceSmart’s Cumberland, Portmore club will play a crucial role in our supply chain, ensuring the efficient and compliant processing of all incoming international shipments. This position is vital for maintaining our inventory levels, supporting sales initiatives, and upholding our unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding value to our members. You will be responsible for a diverse range of administrative and coordination tasks related to import logistics, including the meticulous preparation, verification, and submission of critical shipping documents, commercial invoices, and customs declarations. A key aspect of this role involves liaising proactively with various stakeholders: international vendors, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal teams such as merchandising, warehouse operations, and finance. You will diligently track the status of shipments, proactively resolve any discrepancies or delays that may arise, and ensure all local and international regulatory requirements are met for goods entering Jamaica. This includes verifying Harmonized System (HS) codes, accurately calculating duties and taxes, and ensuring proper permits and licenses are in place where necessary. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced retail environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Process and meticulously verify import documentation, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin.
  • Coordinate effectively with freight forwarders and customs brokers to ensure timely customs clearance and delivery of goods.
  • Track and monitor the status of international shipments, providing regular status updates to relevant internal departments.
  • Ensure strict compliance with local customs regulations, tariffs, and all applicable import laws of Jamaica.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all import transactions and associated expenses.
  • Proactively identify and resolve discrepancies with vendors, carriers, or customs authorities.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of customs declarations and accurate duty/tax calculations.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with internal teams regarding incoming inventory, delivery schedules, and potential issues.
  • Support the inventory management team with precise data entry related to received goods.
  • Generate reports on import activities and shipping statuses as required by management.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in an administrative or clerical role, preferably within logistics, supply chain, or a related field.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in data entry and document processing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) for record-keeping and communication.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of import/export documentation and terminology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience specifically in import operations, customs brokerage, or freight forwarding.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican customs regulations and import procedures.
  • Familiarity with inventory management systems or ERP software.
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
