Job Description
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Inventory Clerk to join our dedicated team at Hi-Lo Food Stores in Alexandria, Saint Ann Parish. This full-time role is critical to maintaining the operational efficiency and profitability of our store. The Inventory Clerk will be responsible for the accurate and timely management of all incoming and outgoing merchandise, ensuring precise stock records are maintained. You will play a pivotal role in optimizing inventory levels, preventing stockouts, and minimizing waste, directly impacting our ability to serve our valued customers effectively. This position requires a proactive individual who can work independently while also collaborating effectively with the wider store team. Your day-to-day activities will involve receiving and verifying deliveries against purchase orders, accurately inputting data into our inventory management system, conducting regular cycle counts and full physical inventories, and investigating any discrepancies. You will also be instrumental in organizing stockrooms, ensuring products are stored safely and efficiently, and assisting with the preparation of outgoing transfers. Key Responsibilities
- Receive, unpack, and verify incoming shipments against purchase orders and invoices for accuracy and quality.
- Accurately record all incoming and outgoing inventory using the store's inventory management system.
- Conduct regular cycle counts and full physical inventories to reconcile stock levels and identify discrepancies.
- Investigate and report inventory discrepancies, root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Organize and maintain the stockroom and storage areas, ensuring products are stored safely, efficiently, and are easily accessible.
- Monitor inventory levels to ensure optimal stock quantities, preventing overstocking or stockouts.
- Assist with preparing merchandise for display on sales floors or for transfer to other locations.
- Ensure proper rotation of perishable goods (FIFO – First-In, First-Out) to minimize spoilage and waste.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the stockroom and receiving areas.
- Collaborate with the management team and other departments to ensure smooth inventory operations.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent (CXC passes preferred)
- Minimum of 1 year experience in inventory management, stock control, or a similar role, preferably in a retail environment
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency in basic mathematics and data entry
- Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) and inventory management software
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and stand for extended periods
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or certificate in supply chain management, business administration, or a related field
- Experience with specific retail POS or inventory management systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle Retail)
- Knowledge of retail inventory best practices and procedures
- Forklift certification (if applicable for larger warehouse operations)
