Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated, thorough, and reliable Janitor (Building Cleaner) to join our essential team in Nairobi. This vital role ensures the cleanliness, orderliness, and safety of our office spaces, common areas, and facilities, directly contributing to a productive and healthy environment for our staff and visitors. As a Janitor, you will be responsible for maintaining our premises to the highest standards of hygiene and presentation, playing a crucial part in the smooth daily operations of a leading wildlife conservation organization. Your meticulous attention to detail, reliability, and unwavering commitment to maintaining a pristine environment will be greatly valued as you support our mission from behind the scenes. This is an on-site, full-time position requiring consistent physical presence and dedication to keeping our operational hub spotless and welcoming for everyone who steps through our doors. This role is fundamental to the health and safety of our workplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing floors in offices, corridors, meeting rooms, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and kitchens thoroughly, restocking supplies such as toilet paper, soap, and paper towels as needed.
- Empty trash receptacles and recycling bins regularly, ensuring proper waste segregation and disposal according to established guidelines.
- Dust and wipe down all surfaces, including desks, chairs, windowsills, shelves, and office equipment, to maintain a clean appearance.
- Clean interior windows, glass partitions, and mirrors to ensure clarity and sparkle.
- Monitor and maintain an accurate inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, reporting needs for replenishment in a timely manner.
- Operate and maintain various cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, floor polishers) safely and effectively, performing routine checks.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks, such as changing lightbulbs, or promptly report larger issues to the facility management.
- Ensure all health and safety regulations and procedures are strictly followed during all cleaning operations to prevent accidents.
- Assist with setting up and tidying meeting rooms or event spaces before and after use as required.
- Maintain a friendly, professional, and discreet demeanor with all staff, visitors, and volunteers.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures related to facility management and employee conduct.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 1 year) in janitorial, custodial, or professional cleaning services.
- Solid knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment for various surfaces.
- Ability to handle basic cleaning chemicals safely and efficiently, understanding safety data sheets (SDS).
- Strong attention to detail and a consistently high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
- Physical stamina and mobility to perform duties, including lifting up to 25kg, bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for extended periods.
- Exceptional reliability, punctuality, and a strong, proactive work ethic.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of health and safety regulations relevant to cleaning operations.
- Fluency in English or Swahili, with basic communication skills in the other language.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working in a busy office environment or similar institutional setting.
- Familiarity with environmentally friendly cleaning practices and products.
- Certification in janitorial services or health and safety training.
- Ability to identify and report maintenance issues promptly and accurately.
