Job Description
The Vista Newspaper is seeking a passionate and driven Full-Time Journalist to join our dynamic Editorial Team in Bethlehem, Free State. Key Responsibilities
- Identify, research, and pitch original story ideas relevant to the Bethlehem and Eastern Free State community.
- Conduct interviews with diverse sources, including community leaders, residents, officials, and experts, ensuring accuracy and balance.
- Write clear, concise, engaging, and well-structured news articles, features, opinion pieces, and reports for print and digital platforms.
- Attend community meetings, press conferences, court proceedings, and local events as required.
- Verify facts, sources, and information thoroughly to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
- Edit and proofread own work for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and factual accuracy.
- Collaborate closely with the editorial team, photographers, and graphic designers to produce compelling content.
- Meet strict daily and weekly deadlines for content submission.
- Develop and maintain a network of credible sources within the community.
- Contribute to the newspaper's online presence, including website updates and social media engagement.
Required Skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proven ability to research, gather, and synthesize information from multiple sources.
- Strong interviewing and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent command of journalistic ethics and best practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office Suite, email, internet research).
- Valid driver's license and own reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
- Critical thinking and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Afrikaans and/or Sesotho.
- Experience with content management systems (CMS) and digital publishing tools.
- Basic photography and/or videography skills.
- Familiarity with the socio-political landscape and community issues of Bethlehem and the Free State.
