Key Responsibilities

  • Assist chefs with basic food preparation tasks, including washing, peeling, chopping vegetables, and preparing ingredients according to recipes and instructions.
  • Maintain high standards of kitchen cleanliness and hygiene at all times, including washing dishes, utensils, pots, and pans using dishwashers or by hand.
  • Ensure kitchen work surfaces, floors, walls, and equipment are regularly cleaned and sanitised in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Support the culinary team in setting up and clearing down workstations and dining areas before, during, and after service.
  • Properly store food items and supplies, ensuring adherence to FIFO (First-In, First-Out) principles and appropriate temperature controls.
  • Assist with receiving and storing deliveries, checking for quality, quantity, and reporting any discrepancies.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly and in accordance with established environmental and lodge procedures.
  • Operate basic kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, such as blenders, mixers, and slicers, after proper training.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and food handling regulations and guidelines.
  • Report any maintenance issues, equipment malfunctions, or hazards to the head chef or supervisor promptly.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all kitchen staff and other lodge departments to ensure seamless service and guest satisfaction.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of kitchen operations and food hygiene practices.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and efficiently from supervisors and chefs.
  • Strong physical stamina and ability to stand for long periods, lift moderate weights, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a proactive approach to cleanliness and organisation.
  • Reliable, punctual, and a strong sense of responsibility and commitment.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as part of a diverse team.
  • Good communication skills (basic English and Sesotho preferred for effective team interaction).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (even informal or volunteer) in a kitchen, restaurant, or hospitality environment.
  • Familiarity with various kitchen equipment and basic cooking techniques.
  • Knowledge of local Basotho cuisine and ingredients.
  • Food handler's permit or relevant hygiene certification.
  • First Aid certification (advantageous).
