Job Description

Safaricom PLC is seeking a talented and highly motivated Lighting Technician to join our dynamic Production Crew in Upper Hill, Nairobi. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in conceptualizing, designing, setting up, and operating sophisticated lighting systems for diverse production needs. You will work closely with directors, producers, and other technical crew members to ensure the lighting perfectly complements the artistic vision, enhances storytelling, and meets all technical specifications. From intricate stage lighting for high-profile corporate presentations to dynamic illumination for live streaming events, your expertise will ensure every visual element is perfectly highlighted.

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of lighting equipment, including inventory management, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and ensuring all operations adhere to the highest safety standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement creative lighting plots for various events, broadcasts, and corporate productions.
  • Set up, operate, and dismantle a wide range of lighting equipment, including intelligent fixtures, LED walls, conventional lights, control consoles, and dimmers.
  • Perform pre-show checks, calibrate equipment, and troubleshoot technical issues swiftly during live productions.
  • Collaborate closely with directors, producers, stage managers, and other crew members to achieve desired lighting effects and fulfill production requirements.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols for all lighting equipment installation and operation.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, repairs, and inventory management of all lighting gear.
  • Manage power distribution and cabling for lighting systems, ensuring electrical safety and efficiency.
  • Stay updated with new lighting technologies, software, and industry best practices to continually enhance production quality.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior technicians or interns as needed.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in operating lighting consoles (e.g., GrandMA, Avolites, Hog4).
  • Strong knowledge of DMX, Art-Net, and other lighting control protocols.
  • Familiarity with various lighting fixtures, including moving lights, LEDs, and conventional sources.
  • Ability to read and interpret lighting plots and technical drawings.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a live production environment.
  • Understanding of electrical principles, power distribution, and safety standards.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Physical fitness to lift and move heavy equipment, and work in various conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Film Production, Theatre Arts, Technical Production, or a related field.
  • Certification in relevant lighting software or equipment operation.
  • Experience with video integration and media servers (e.g., Resolume, ArKaos).
  • Knowledge of stage rigging and truss systems.
  • Portfolio showcasing previous lighting design and operation work.
