Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Livestock Caretaker to join our client’s thriving agricultural operation in Curepipe, Plaines Wilhems District. This pivotal role involves the daily care and management of various farm animals, ensuring their health, comfort, and productivity. As a Livestock Caretaker, you will be the backbone of our farm’s animal welfare program, responsible for critical tasks that directly impact the well-being of our livestock and the efficiency of our operations.

Your day will be dynamic and fulfilling, starting with morning checks, feeding routines, and ensuring clean living environments. You’ll work closely with the farm management team, communicating observations about animal health and behavior, and participating in proactive measures to prevent illness. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily feeding and watering of all livestock according to established schedules and dietary requirements.
  • Monitor animal health, identify signs of illness or injury, and report any concerns to farm management immediately.
  • Clean and maintain stalls, pens, and other animal housing areas to ensure a hygienic environment.
  • Assist with animal handling, including moving, restraining, and loading/unloading animals safely.
  • Administer medications or treatments as directed by veterinary staff or farm management.
  • Operate and maintain basic farm equipment such as tractors, feeders, and cleaning tools.
  • Maintain accurate records of feeding, breeding, health treatments, and other relevant livestock data.
  • Assist with birthing and care of newborn animals, providing necessary support and monitoring.
  • Ensure security of livestock facilities, including fences, gates, and shelters.
  • Participate in general farm maintenance tasks as needed, including repairs and upkeep of infrastructure.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in livestock care and farm operations (minimum 6 months).
  • Strong understanding of animal welfare principles and husbandry practices.
  • Ability to identify common animal diseases and health issues.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting heavy loads.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Basic knowledge of farm safety protocols.
  • Valid driving license (preferably for agricultural vehicles).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational training or certification in agriculture, animal science, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific types of livestock (e.g., cattle, poultry, goats, sheep).
  • Familiarity with record-keeping software or systems for livestock management.
  • Basic mechanical skills for minor equipment maintenance.
