Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Livestock Caretaker to join our agricultural team in Black River, Saint Elizabeth Parish. This full-time position is crucial to the health, well-being, and productivity of our livestock. As a Livestock Caretaker, you will play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of our farm, ensuring that all animals receive the highest standard of care. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily feeding and watering of livestock according to established schedules and dietary requirements.
  • Clean and maintain animal housing, enclosures, and feeding equipment to ensure optimal hygiene and sanitation.
  • Monitor the health and behavior of animals daily, promptly identifying and reporting any signs of illness, injury, or distress to the farm manager.
  • Assist with animal handling, restraint, and movement for veterinary examinations, vaccinations, and other routine procedures.
  • Support breeding programs, including monitoring animals during breeding, assisting with births, and caring for young animals.
  • Maintain detailed records of animal feed consumption, health treatments, breeding cycles, and production data.
  • Operate and maintain farm equipment safely, including feeders, water systems, and cleaning tools.
  • Implement and adhere to biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of diseases and maintain a healthy environment.
  • Participate in general farm maintenance tasks, such as fencing repair, grounds keeping, and equipment upkeep.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for self and colleagues.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to achieve farm goals and maintain a positive working atmosphere.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in livestock handling and care (minimum 1 year).
  • Strong understanding of animal welfare principles and basic animal husbandry.
  • Ability to observe animal behavior and detect signs of illness or distress.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods, in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for reporting observations and maintaining records.
  • Reliable, punctual, and highly responsible with a strong work ethic.
  • Basic knowledge of farm equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Residency in or near Black River, Saint Elizabeth Parish, or willingness to relocate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in agriculture or animal science is a plus.
  • Experience with a variety of livestock species (e.g., cattle, goats, pigs, poultry).
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary first aid.
  • Familiarity with agricultural biosecurity measures.
  • Valid driver’s license.
