Job Description
Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Marine Conservation Assistant to join our team, operating with a flexible schedule from our base in Curepipe. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about marine biology, environmental protection, and community engagement to contribute directly to critical conservation efforts across Mauritius’s stunning coastal and marine environments. While our coordination office is located centrally, the essence of this role involves active participation in fieldwork, community outreach, and data management, often requiring travel to various coastal sites.
As a Marine Conservation Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting our ongoing projects aimed at protecting coral reefs, mangrove forests, marine wildlife, and promoting sustainable fishing practices. Your work will involve assisting senior conservationists in a variety of tasks, from conducting ecological surveys and monitoring species populations to engaging with local communities on environmental awareness campaigns. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in conducting marine ecological surveys, including coral reef assessments, fish counts, and invertebrate monitoring.
- Participate in fieldwork activities such as data collection, specimen identification, and equipment deployment/retrieval.
- Support community outreach programs and educational workshops focused on marine conservation awareness.
- Contribute to data entry, organization, and preliminary analysis using various software tools.
- Help maintain and prepare field equipment, ensuring readiness for expeditions.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and other communication materials.
- Collaborate with team members on project planning and logistical arrangements.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental guidelines during fieldwork.
- Support administrative tasks as needed to ensure smooth project operations.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
- Strong interest and basic knowledge in marine biology or environmental science
- Ability to work effectively in a team and independently with minimal supervision
- Good physical fitness and ability to work in outdoor conditions (including marine environments)
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Valid Mauritian driving license or reliable transportation for fieldwork
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Conservation, or related field (or currently pursuing)
- Previous volunteer or work experience in marine conservation, fieldwork, or research
- Basic snorkeling or diving certification (e.g., PADI Open Water)
- Knowledge of local Mauritian marine flora and fauna
- Proficiency in French and/or Mauritian Creole
