Job Description

Zanzibar Marine Conservation (ZMC) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Marine Research Helper to join our field team in Vitongoji, Pemba South. This is an incredible opportunity for an individual who is keen to gain hands-on experience in marine biology, ecological monitoring, and community-based conservation in a vibrant island setting. As a Marine Research Helper, you will play a crucial role in supporting our scientists and field researchers in their daily activities, which include everything from underwater surveys to data collection and equipment maintenance. Your work will directly contribute to our understanding of local marine health, helping us to develop and implement effective conservation strategies for coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests.
This full-time position requires a willingness to work outdoors, often in challenging marine conditions, and a genuine interest in learning new skills. You will be an integral part of a small, dedicated team, working closely with experienced marine biologists and engaging with local communities. Daily tasks may vary widely, offering a dynamic and enriching experience. You will be exposed to various research methodologies, conservation techniques, and the rich cultural tapestry of Pemba. Key Responsibilities
- Assist marine biologists and researchers with daily field activities, including snorkeling and/or diving surveys.
- Help with the deployment, retrieval, and maintenance of field equipment such as transect tapes, cameras, and data loggers.
- Participate in data collection, including visual observations of marine life (fish, corals, invertebrates) and environmental parameters.
- Support the entry, organization, and basic analysis of collected data under supervision.
- Clean and maintain research tools, diving gear, boats, and other field equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Assist with logistical arrangements for field trips, including transport, supplies, and community liaison.
- Engage respectfully with local fishing communities to foster good relations and support community outreach initiatives.
- Contribute to the general upkeep and organization of the research station and storage facilities.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and conservation guidelines during field operations.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
Required Skills
- Strong swimming ability and comfort in open water conditions.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel).
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data collection.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous outdoor tasks.
- Fluency in Swahili (essential for community engagement).
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Genuine passion for marine conservation and environmental protection.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a field-based role, especially in marine environments.
- Open Water diving certification (PADI, SSI, or equivalent).
- Basic knowledge of marine biology or ecology.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience working with coastal communities.
