Job Description

The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Marine Research Helper to join our team in the enchanting Changuu Area, near Zanzibar City. This full-time role offers a unique opportunity to work hands-on with experienced marine scientists, supporting vital projects focused on coral reef health, marine biodiversity surveys, sustainable fisheries, and environmental monitoring in one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions.

As a Marine Research Helper, you will be an integral part of our field operations, assisting with the collection of essential data, maintaining specialized equipment, and ensuring the smooth execution of research expeditions. This role requires a physically fit individual who thrives in outdoor and marine environments, often involving extended periods on boats, in the water, and under varying weather conditions. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist researchers in the planning, preparation, and execution of marine field surveys and data collection activities around Changuu Island and nearby areas.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, including dive gear, sampling tools, small boats, and data loggers, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
  • Participate actively in underwater surveys (e.g., coral reef assessments, fish counts, seagrass monitoring) using snorkeling or SCUBA diving techniques.
  • Collect, label, and process marine samples (water, sediment, organisms) according to established scientific protocols.
  • Perform basic data entry, organization, and preliminary quality checks of field-collected information.
  • Provide logistical support for research expeditions, including transportation, equipment setup, and site preparation.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and environmental guidelines during all field operations.
  • Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities as needed.
  • Contribute to general upkeep and organization of research materials and supplies.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and local communities to achieve project objectives.

Required Skills

  • Excellent swimming ability and comfort in open water conditions.
  • Strong physical fitness and stamina for demanding field work.
  • Basic understanding of marine ecosystems and conservation principles.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Problem-solving aptitude and ability to adapt to changing field conditions.
  • Proficiency in basic English and Swahili (verbal communication).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (at least 6 months) in marine field research, environmental monitoring, or related outdoor work.
  • Certified Open Water SCUBA diver (or higher) from a recognized agency (PADI, SSI, etc.).
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience operating small boats or working on marine vessels.
  • Relevant diploma or certificate in marine science, environmental science, biology, or a related field.
