Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Materials Scientist to join a pioneering research and development team based in the vibrant scientific community of Edinburgh. As a Materials Scientist, you will be instrumental in the discovery, characterisation, and application of novel materials across various sectors, from advanced manufacturing to sustainable technologies. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experimental plans for the synthesis, processing, and characterisation of novel materials.
  • Perform advanced material characterisation using techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.
  • Analyse and interpret complex data sets, drawing sound scientific conclusions and generating comprehensive technical reports.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product developers to integrate new materials into prototypes and products.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific literature, emerging technologies, and industry trends in materials science.
  • Contribute to patent applications, scientific publications, and presentations at conferences.
  • Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental guidelines in all laboratory activities.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience in materials synthesis, processing, and characterisation techniques.
  • Strong understanding of material properties, structure-property relationships, and degradation mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Origin) and statistical methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a strong analytical mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience or relevant industry experience in a research and development setting.
  • Experience with computational materials science (e.g., DFT, MD simulations).
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 17025).
  • Track record of scientific publications, patents, or successful project delivery.
