Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team and play a pivotal role in the optimal functioning of our industrial water and sewerage treatment plants and pumping stations across Malindi, Kilifi County. This crucial position involves ensuring the reliable operation, efficient maintenance, and strategic improvement of all mechanical systems and equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the full lifecycle of plant machinery, from installation and commissioning to preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and eventual decommissioning. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical equipment in water abstraction, treatment, pumping, and wastewater treatment plants, including pumps, motors, valves, pipelines, compressors, and generators.
  • Develop and implement robust preventive and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Conduct thorough inspections, diagnose complex mechanical faults, and execute effective repair strategies.
  • Manage and supervise maintenance teams, including technicians and artisans, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.
  • Participate in the planning, design, and execution of new mechanical installations, plant upgrades, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Prepare technical specifications for new equipment procurement, evaluating vendor proposals and ensuring compliance with engineering standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, equipment performance, and spare parts inventory using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ensure strict compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to operational staff on equipment operation and basic maintenance.
  • Analyze plant performance data to identify areas for improvement and implement efficiency-enhancing solutions.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering, specifically within an industrial plant, manufacturing, or utility environment.
  • Proven experience with water and/or wastewater treatment plant equipment and processes (pumps, blowers, filters, valves, piping systems).
  • Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, rotating machinery, and process control mechanisms.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team supervision capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) as a Professional Engineer.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., Institution of Engineers of Kenya – IEK).
  • Experience with SCADA systems and process automation in a plant environment.
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP) or proven experience in managing engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with Kenyan environmental regulations and water sector guidelines.
