Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Mechanical Engineer to join our operations team in Botanic, Belfast. This pivotal role focuses on ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and safety of our plant machinery and equipment. As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Plant Operations & Equipment Repair, you will be instrumental in minimizing downtime, improving operational efficiency, and extending the lifespan of critical assets. You will be responsible for a wide array of tasks, from routine maintenance and inspection to complex fault diagnosis, repair, and modification of mechanical systems. This role requires a proactive approach to identifying potential issues, implementing preventative measures, and contributing to long-term asset management strategies. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including production, electrical, and health & safety departments, to uphold the highest standards of operational integrity and safety. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on a wide range of industrial mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
  • Perform detailed fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical failures, ensuring root causes are identified and rectified to prevent recurrence.
  • Oversee the installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of new machinery and equipment, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and safety regulations.
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules, procedures, and best practices to optimize equipment reliability and availability.
  • Collaborate with production teams to minimize operational disruption during maintenance activities and provide technical support for process improvements.
  • Manage spare parts inventory, procure necessary components, and liaise with suppliers and contractors as required.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Generate comprehensive reports on maintenance activities, equipment performance, and repair history.
  • Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades, modifications, and process optimizations to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair within an industrial plant or manufacturing environment.
  • Proven expertise in diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems and components.
  • Strong knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques and asset management principles.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a methodical approach to fault finding.
  • Familiarity with industrial safety standards and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Experience with condition monitoring techniques (e.g., vibration analysis, thermography).
  • Relevant certifications in industrial machinery or safety.
