Job Description

Zimasco (Pvt) Ltd, a leading ferrochrome producer with significant operations in Zimbabwe, is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Mechanical Fitter (Class 1) to join our dynamic maintenance team in Kwekwe, Midlands Province. For decades, Zimasco has been at the forefront of the mining and metallurgical industry in Zimbabwe, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy and employing a substantial workforce. As a Mechanical Fitter, you will be an indispensable part of our engineering department, responsible for ensuring the optimal functionality and reliability of a diverse range of heavy industrial machinery and equipment essential to our ferrochrome production processes. This pivotal role involves performing precision mechanical fitting tasks, executing both preventative and corrective maintenance, and contributing to the overall operational efficiency of our plant. Your expertise will be crucial in minimizing downtime, enhancing equipment lifespan, and upholding the stringent safety and quality standards that Zimasco is known for.

You will be expected to work with various mechanical systems, including but not limited to conveyor systems, crushing and screening plants, pumps, gearboxes, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and general fixed plant machinery. The role demands a keen eye for detail, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and a proactive approach to identifying potential mechanical issues before they escalate. You will interpret engineering drawings and schematics, utilize a wide array of hand and power tools, and apply your diagnostic skills to troubleshoot complex mechanical breakdowns efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, inspections, and servicing of plant machinery and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults accurately and efficiently using schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools.
  • Execute repairs and replace defective parts, including bearings, gears, shafts, seals, and other mechanical components.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and statutory regulations at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and parts utilized.
  • Collaborate effectively with other engineering disciplines (electrical, instrumentation) and operational teams.
  • Assist in the installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of new or upgraded plant equipment.
  • Conduct fabrication and modification work as required to improve equipment reliability and performance.
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Participate in root cause analysis for recurring mechanical failures.

Required Skills

  • Class 1 Mechanical Fitter Trade Certificate
  • Proven experience in heavy industrial or mining environments
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics
  • Excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals
  • Proficiency in using a wide range of hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment
  • Demonstrable commitment to safety and adherence to strict safety protocols
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in demanding industrial conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed apprenticeship in Mechanical Fitting
  • Experience with crushers, conveyors, pumps, and gearboxes specific to mining/metallurgical plants
  • Basic welding and fabrication skills
  • Valid Class 2 or Class 4 driver's license
  • Computer literacy for maintenance management systems (CMMS)
