Key Responsibilities
- Prepare examination rooms, ensuring they are clean, stocked, and ready for patient visits.
- Escort patients to examination rooms, take vital signs, and accurately document patient medical history and chief complaints.
- Assist physicians and nurses with examinations, minor procedures, and treatments as directed.
- Perform basic diagnostic tests, such as EKGs, phlebotomy, and urine analysis, following established protocols.
- Administer medications as directed by a physician, under strict supervision and within scope of practice.
- Manage patient scheduling, appointment reminders, and follow-up care coordination.
- Maintain electronic health records (EHR) with meticulous attention to detail and confidentiality.
- Handle phone calls, respond to patient inquiries, and facilitate communication between patients and healthcare providers.
- Sterilize medical instruments and maintain inventory of medical supplies, ordering replacements as needed.
- Provide patients with clear instructions regarding their care, medications, and follow-up appointments.
- Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including patient privacy (HIPAA equivalent in Botswana) and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Proficiency in taking vital signs, performing phlebotomy, and assisting with minor procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-first approach.
- Proficient in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
- High level of professionalism, empathy, and ethical conduct.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Medical Assistant (e.g., CMA, RMA) is highly preferred.
- Experience with specific EHR systems used in Botswana healthcare settings.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Fluency in Setswana and English.
- Previous experience in a private hospital or large clinic setting.
