Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of complex laboratory tests on biological samples (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) with precision and accuracy.
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate advanced laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and adherence to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Conduct thorough quality control and quality assurance procedures to maintain the highest standards of laboratory testing.
  • Interpret and validate test results, identifying abnormalities and potential sources of error.
  • Document all test results, observations, and relevant data accurately and efficiently in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, laboratory protocols, and relevant professional guidelines (e.g., UKAS, HCPC).
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with instrumentation and methodologies, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide timely and accurate diagnostic information.
  • Participate in continuing professional development activities and stay abreast of new advancements in medical laboratory science.
  • Assist in the training and mentorship of junior laboratory staff and students as required.

Required Skills

  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist (or equivalent for international applicants).
  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or a related scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience performing a broad range of clinical laboratory tests in a diagnostic setting.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining complex laboratory equipment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong understanding of quality control and assurance principles.
  • Competence in using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for data entry and retrieval.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialist portfolio (e.g., IBMS Specialist Diploma) or postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with advanced diagnostic techniques (e.g., molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry).
  • Previous experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and active participation in scientific communities.
