Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, label, and process patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare reagents, media, and specimens for analysis according to established protocols.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and analyses under supervision, adhering strictly to quality control procedures.
  • Record and document results precisely, maintaining meticulous records and ensuring data integrity.
  • Assist Medical Laboratory Scientists and Pathologists with complex procedures and experiments.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering, stocking, and organizing supplies.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including COSHH, and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory services and processes.

Required Skills

  • Relevant qualification in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific discipline (e.g., NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 1 year of practical experience working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant or similar role in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in sample handling and data recording.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety procedures and infection control.
  • Ability to follow precise instructions and work effectively within a team.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for data entry and record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Knowledge of UK healthcare regulations and standards (e.g., ISO 15189).
  • Previous experience in a busy diagnostic laboratory.
  • A desire to pursue further education or professional development in laboratory science.
