Key Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary collection) with proficiency and care, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Process and prepare various biological specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for analytical testing, adhering to established protocols.
- Label, sort, and log specimens accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to maintain traceability and data integrity.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, aliquotters, and blood gas analyzers, performing routine quality control checks.
- Handle and store reagents, chemicals, and supplies according to safety guidelines and inventory management procedures.
- Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare professionals, and laboratory staff regarding specimen collection and handling.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, strictly following infection control and biosafety guidelines.
- Assist technologists with various laboratory procedures and tasks as required, contributing to overall laboratory efficiency.
Required Skills
- Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program.
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques for diverse patient populations.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance practices.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and data entry.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Basic computer literacy, including experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Current certification with CSMLS (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent.
- Experience with various laboratory departments (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology).
