Key Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary collection) with proficiency and care, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Process and prepare various biological specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for analytical testing, adhering to established protocols.
  • Label, sort, and log specimens accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to maintain traceability and data integrity.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, aliquotters, and blood gas analyzers, performing routine quality control checks.
  • Handle and store reagents, chemicals, and supplies according to safety guidelines and inventory management procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare professionals, and laboratory staff regarding specimen collection and handling.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, strictly following infection control and biosafety guidelines.
  • Assist technologists with various laboratory procedures and tasks as required, contributing to overall laboratory efficiency.

Required Skills

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program.
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques for diverse patient populations.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and data entry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Basic computer literacy, including experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current certification with CSMLS (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent.
  • Experience with various laboratory departments (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology).
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new procedures and technologies.
