Key Responsibilities
- Perform a wide range of laboratory tests and analyses on clinical samples, including blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids, across various disciplines (e.g., haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology).
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate highly sophisticated laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting minor issues.
- Interpret and validate test results, reporting findings accurately and efficiently to clinical staff.
- Implement and adhere strictly to quality control and quality assurance procedures, participating in internal and external proficiency testing schemes.
- Maintain meticulous records of all tests performed, results obtained, and quality control data in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate effectively with pathologists, clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
- Participate in the development and implementation of new laboratory techniques and procedures as required.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, laboratory policies, and national standards (e.g., UKAS, HCPC).
- Contribute to training and mentoring of junior staff or students, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Required Skills
- BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent, acceptable for HCPC registration.
- Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist (or eligibility to register).
- Demonstrable practical experience working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in performing a broad range of laboratory techniques and operating relevant analytical equipment.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in data recording and analysis.
- Strong understanding of quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory accreditation standards.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with colleagues and healthcare professionals.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and general IT applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant biomedical science discipline.
- Specialist portfolio (e.g., IBMS Specialist Diploma).
- Experience in a specific diagnostic discipline such as virology, molecular diagnostics, or toxicology.
