Job Description
Are you a highly motivated and skilled Medical Laboratory Technician passionate about contributing to accurate diagnoses and patient well-being? Butare University Teaching Hospital (CHUB), a leading public healthcare institution and referral hospital in Rwanda, is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to join our dynamic and vital laboratory team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in the performance of a wide range of sophisticated laboratory tests, analyses, and procedures that are absolutely essential for the accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and proactive prevention of various diseases. Working within our modern, state-of-the-art, and well-equipped laboratory facilities, you will be directly responsible for the critical stages of specimen management, from meticulous collection and proper processing to comprehensive analysis. Your daily tasks will span across diverse laboratory disciplines, including but not limited to hematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, serology, and immunology. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests on patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) using automated analyzers and manual methods according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and culture media, ensuring their quality and sterility for accurate testing.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, performing routine quality checks and troubleshooting minor technical issues to ensure optimal performance.
- Adhere strictly to internal and external quality control procedures, actively participating in proficiency testing programs to maintain accreditation standards.
- Accurately record, verify, and report test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or manual logbooks, ensuring data integrity and patient confidentiality.
- Ensure proper collection, labeling, handling, and storage of specimens to preserve sample integrity and prevent contamination.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, rigorously adhering to biosafety, chemical safety, and waste management protocols.
- Assist in the training and mentorship of junior laboratory staff, interns, and students, sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Participate in the inventory management of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, initiating procurement requests as needed.
- Collaborate effectively with pathologists, clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate timely and accurate diagnoses.
Required Skills
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Valid practicing license from the relevant professional regulatory body in Rwanda.
- Minimum of 1.5 years (18 months) of proven post-qualification experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a hospital or clinical setting.
- Proficiency in performing tests across various laboratory disciplines including Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology, Serology, and Immunology.
- Strong understanding and practical application of laboratory quality control and quality assurance principles.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills for accurate test interpretation and troubleshooting.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and meticulous record-keeping abilities.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Proficiency in Kinyarwanda and English (both written and spoken) for effective communication.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for data entry and retrieval.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or a related field.
- Experience with specific advanced laboratory equipment or specialized diagnostic techniques.
- Additional certifications or specialized training in specific laboratory areas (e.g., molecular diagnostics, blood banking).
- Prior experience working in a teaching hospital or research-focused medical environment.
- Knowledge of French is considered an advantage.
