Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Full-Time Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our dynamic team at our diagnostic center in Pietermaritzburg. As a vital member of our laboratory, you will play a crucial role in performing a variety of complex laboratory tests that aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of laboratory tests and analyses on biological specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) using automated and manual methods.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and troubleshooting minor issues.
  • Prepare reagents, controls, and specimens for testing, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Record and report test results accurately and efficiently, adhering to turnaround time requirements.
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of results.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and laboratory regulations.
  • Assist with inventory management, ordering supplies, and maintaining a well-stocked and organized work area.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities to stay current with advancements in laboratory technology and practices.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, medical staff, and other departments to ensure smooth workflow and patient care.

Required Skills

  • National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • Minimum of 12 months post-qualification practical experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in performing a variety of laboratory techniques across different disciplines (e.g., Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology).
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literacy, including experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with specific diagnostic platforms or instrumentation common in high-volume laboratories.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems (e.g., ISO 15189).
  • Additional certifications or specializations in specific laboratory disciplines.
