Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive antenatal care, including physical examinations, health education, and psychosocial support to expectant mothers.
- Manage labor and delivery processes, including monitoring fetal well-being, administering necessary medical interventions, and ensuring a safe birthing experience.
- Offer immediate postnatal care to mothers and newborns, including breastfeeding support, neonatal examinations, and identifying potential complications.
- Respond effectively to obstetric emergencies, collaborating with medical teams to ensure optimal outcomes for mother and baby.
- Educate women and their families on reproductive health, family planning, infant care, and healthy lifestyle choices.
- Maintain accurate and thorough patient records, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to hospital policies and national guidelines.
- Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to all infection control protocols and maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
- Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring their rights and preferences are respected throughout the care continuum.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
Required Skills
- Valid registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica as a Registered Midwife.
- Proven clinical proficiency in antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to empathize and build rapport with patients and families.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, especially in emergency situations.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- High degree of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct.
- Proficiency in electronic health record systems and basic computer applications.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
- Knowledge of national maternal and child health guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Midwifery or a related field.
- Advanced certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Experience working in a high-volume public hospital maternity unit.
- Familiarity with national maternal and child health policies and programs in Jamaica.
- Additional training in specific areas such as high-risk pregnancy management or lactation consultation.
