Job Description

Sedibeng Ster is seeking a dynamic, tenacious, and highly motivated News Reporter to join our dedicated team in Sasolburg, Free State. This is a primarily ‘on the field’ role, requiring a journalist who thrives in a fast-paced environment, has a keen eye for local stories, and is passionate about community news. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, researching, writing, and reporting on a wide range of news and current affairs impacting the Sasolburg area. This includes attending community events, council meetings, court proceedings, and crime scenes, conducting interviews with diverse sources, and developing strong relationships within the community. You will be expected to uncover unique angles, deliver compelling narratives, and provide accurate, unbiased reporting across various platforms, including print and digital. We’re looking for someone who can not only break news but also tell the deeper story behind the headlines, engaging our readers with insightful and well-researched content. Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, research, and report on local news, current events, and issues relevant to the Sasolburg community.
  • Attend press conferences, community meetings, court hearings, and other events to gather information and conduct interviews.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts, including community leaders, officials, and residents.
  • Conduct interviews, take notes, and record audio/video as needed to gather accurate and comprehensive information.
  • Write clear, concise, accurate, and engaging news articles, features, and reports under tight deadlines.
  • Verify facts, sources, and information to ensure accuracy and journalistic integrity.
  • Contribute to the newspaper's online presence by adapting content for digital platforms and social media.
  • Proactively pitch story ideas and follow up on leads from the community.
  • Collaborate with editors and photographers to ensure high-quality content and visual storytelling.
  • Adhere to ethical journalistic standards and media law.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong interviewing, research, and investigative skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Proficiency in using word processing software and basic digital tools.
  • Valid driver's license and own reliable transport (essential for on-field reporting).
  • High level of integrity and commitment to ethical journalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience as a reporter or journalist, preferably within a local news environment.
  • Knowledge of the Sasolburg / Sedibeng District community and its socio-political landscape.
  • Proficiency in additional official South African languages (e.g., Afrikaans, Sesotho).
  • Experience with multimedia storytelling (e.g., photography, video editing for web).
