Key Responsibilities

  • Warmly welcome patients to the clinic, managing appointments and ensuring a smooth flow.
  • Assist patients in selecting suitable frames, lenses, and contact lenses based on their prescription, lifestyle, and aesthetic preferences.
  • Provide clear explanations of various lens types, coatings, and additional optical products.
  • Conduct pre-screening tests, including visual acuity measurements, auto-refraction, and visual field screenings, accurately recording results.
  • Dispense and fit spectacles, making necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and optimal vision.
  • Educate patients on proper eyewear care, contact lens insertion/removal, and general eye health practices.
  • Process orders, manage stock, and maintain accurate patient records with strict adherence to data protection guidelines.
  • Handle patient queries, resolve issues, and provide administrative support to the optometry team.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of the reception area, waiting room, and retail displays.
  • Actively participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance optical knowledge and skills.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as an Optical Assistant or in a similar customer-facing role within healthcare retail.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong patient-focused approach with a natural empathy and ability to build rapport.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and experience with optical practice management software.
  • Excellent organisational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Optical Care or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of common eye conditions and optical terminology.
  • Experience with complex dispensing situations.
  • Familiarity with contact lens aftercare and teaching.
