Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive primary eye care examinations, including refraction, visual acuity, visual field testing, tonometry, and ocular health assessments.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage various ocular diseases, conditions, and refractive errors in accordance with professional guidelines.
  • Prescribe and dispense appropriate eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision correction devices.
  • Perform contact lens fittings and evaluations, providing thorough patient education on proper wear, care, and hygiene.
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing ophthalmic procedures, collaborating with ophthalmologists as needed.
  • Educate patients on general eye health, preventative care strategies, lifestyle impacts on vision, and the importance of regular eye examinations.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential patient records in compliance with professional, legal, and company standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with optical dispensers, administrative staff, and other team members to ensure a seamless and positive patient experience.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain ophthalmic equipment and instrumentation, ensuring accuracy, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Refer patients to ophthalmologists or other medical specialists for advanced treatment or consultation when necessary.

Required Skills

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited university or institution.
  • Current and unrestricted license to practice Optometry in Jamaica.
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-licensure experience in a clinical or retail optical setting.
  • Proficiency in performing comprehensive eye examinations and accurately diagnosing a wide range of ocular conditions and refractive errors.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and patient-centric approach.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to develop effective treatment plans.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Competency in using modern ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and electronic health records (EHR) systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization or advanced training in specific areas such as pediatrics, low vision rehabilitation, ocular disease management, or specialty contact lenses.
  • Bilingual capabilities (e.g., fluent in English and conversational Jamaican Patois) to better serve our diverse patient base.
  • Active participation and leadership roles in professional optometric organizations.
  • Experience with diverse patient populations and community outreach programs.
