Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare surfaces by scraping, sanding, or wire-brushing to ensure optimal paint adhesion.
  • Fill cracks, holes, and other surface imperfections with appropriate materials.
  • Apply paint, varnish, stain, wallpaper, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of Holyrood Palace.
  • Select and mix paints to achieve specified colours and textures, ensuring consistency.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding or ladders safely, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Clean up work areas, tools, and equipment meticulously at the end of each workday.
  • Inspect completed work for quality, ensuring adherence to design specifications and historical preservation standards.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of existing decorative finishes and fixtures.
  • Work collaboratively with the maintenance team and other palace staff, respecting the operational needs of a historic site.
  • Handle and store paints and other chemicals safely and responsibly.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Painter and Decorator, demonstrating a high level of skill.
  • Excellent knowledge of painting materials, tools, and application techniques for various surfaces.
  • Proficiency in surface preparation, including patching, sanding, and priming.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as an effective team member.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality craftsmanship.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to perform manual tasks, including lifting and working at heights.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety procedures relevant to construction and maintenance sites.
  • Good communication skills and a professional demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Painting and Decorating or an equivalent vocational certification.
  • Prior experience working on heritage properties, listed buildings, or culturally significant sites.
  • Knowledge of specialist decorative finishes or historical conservation painting techniques.
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written) to facilitate clear communication.
  • Valid UK driving license (desirable but not mandatory).
