Key Responsibilities
- Prepare surfaces by scraping, sanding, or wire-brushing to ensure optimal paint adhesion.
- Fill cracks, holes, and other surface imperfections with appropriate materials.
- Apply paint, varnish, stain, wallpaper, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of Holyrood Palace.
- Select and mix paints to achieve specified colours and textures, ensuring consistency.
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding or ladders safely, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
- Clean up work areas, tools, and equipment meticulously at the end of each workday.
- Inspect completed work for quality, ensuring adherence to design specifications and historical preservation standards.
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of existing decorative finishes and fixtures.
- Work collaboratively with the maintenance team and other palace staff, respecting the operational needs of a historic site.
- Handle and store paints and other chemicals safely and responsibly.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Painter and Decorator, demonstrating a high level of skill.
- Excellent knowledge of painting materials, tools, and application techniques for various surfaces.
- Proficiency in surface preparation, including patching, sanding, and priming.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as an effective team member.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality craftsmanship.
- Physical stamina and dexterity to perform manual tasks, including lifting and working at heights.
- Basic understanding of health and safety procedures relevant to construction and maintenance sites.
- Good communication skills and a professional demeanor.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2/3 in Painting and Decorating or an equivalent vocational certification.
