Job Description
Abdulla Mzee Hospital is seeking a compassionate, reliable, and physically capable Patient Transport Orderly to join our dedicated team immediately. This vital full-time role is at the heart of our patient care operations, ensuring the safe, comfortable, and efficient movement of patients throughout the hospital premises. As a Patient Transport Orderly, you will be a crucial link in the patient journey, interacting directly with patients and their families during what can often be a vulnerable time. You will be responsible for transporting patients to and from various departments, including operating theaters, diagnostic imaging, wards, and outpatient clinics, using wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds.
Your day will involve not just physical transport but also providing reassurance, maintaining patient privacy and dignity, and adhering strictly to infection control and safety protocols. You will be expected to communicate effectively with nursing staff, doctors, and other hospital personnel to ensure seamless transitions and timely patient care. Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently transport patients via wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds to and from various hospital departments (e.g., wards, operating theatres, X-ray, clinics).
- Assist patients with transfers, ensuring their comfort, dignity, and privacy at all times.
- Verify patient identity against transport requests to ensure correct patient transfer.
- Adhere strictly to all hospital policies and procedures, including infection control, manual handling, and patient safety protocols.
- Operate and maintain transport equipment, including regular cleaning and reporting of malfunctions.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with patients, families, and all healthcare staff.
- Provide reassurance and support to patients during transport, addressing any concerns they may have.
- Respond promptly to transport requests and manage time efficiently to meet departmental needs.
- Assist with moving and setting up medical equipment as required for patient care.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including storage areas for transport equipment.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in a patient transport, orderly, or similar role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Excellent physical stamina and strength to push, pull, lift, and maneuver patients and equipment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and empathetic approach.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Knowledge of basic infection control practices and patient safety principles.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology is an advantage.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid.
- Previous experience in a hospital or clinical environment.
