Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations, focusing on musculoskeletal complaints.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and laboratory studies.
- Formulate differential diagnoses and develop comprehensive treatment plans under the supervision of an orthopedic physician.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care, including patient education, wound management, and medication reconciliation.
- Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room during various procedures, such as joint replacements, fracture repairs, and arthroscopy.
- Administer therapeutic injections (e.g., joint, trigger point, steroid) and perform minor procedures like splinting and casting.
- Educate patients and their families on orthopedic conditions, treatment options, recovery protocols, and preventative measures.
- Document all patient encounters accurately and timely in the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
- Participate in on-call rotation as required by the practice to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team including surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, and administrative staff.
Required Skills
- Current NCCPA certification.
- Active Colorado Physician Assistant license or eligibility for immediate licensure.
- DEA registration or ability to obtain.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of orthopedic anatomy, physiology, and common musculoskeletal pathologies.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient education skills.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical and surgical environment.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Proven surgical first assist experience in orthopedic procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (2+ years) as a Physician Assistant in an orthopedic setting.
- Experience with specific orthopedic subspecialties such as sports medicine, trauma, spine, or total joint replacement.
- Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Advanced suturing and wound closure techniques.
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish) is a significant plus.
