Job Description

Mbweni Agrovet & Animal Feed Store is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Part-Time Poultry Farm Technician to join our team in Zanzibar City. This vital role involves assisting with the daily operations of our demonstration and partner poultry farms, ensuring the health, welfare, and optimal productivity of our flocks. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily feeding and watering of poultry, ensuring access to fresh food and water.
  • Monitor flock health and identify any signs of illness, injury, or stress, reporting observations promptly.
  • Administer basic treatments and medications under the guidance and supervision of the farm supervisor or veterinarian.
  • Collect, clean, sort, and grade eggs according to quality standards.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitation in poultry houses, coops, and surrounding areas.
  • Record accurate data on feed consumption, egg production, mortality rates, and other relevant farm metrics.
  • Assist with the implementation of vaccination programs and strict biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on farm equipment such as feeders, waterers, and ventilation systems.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, structural damages, or unusual flock behavior to the farm supervisor immediately.
  • Participate in general farm duties as required, including waste management and environmental upkeep.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 1.5 years) in poultry farming or animal husbandry.
  • Basic understanding of poultry health, nutrition, and common diseases.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 25kg, standing for extended periods, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Strong observation skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions diligently and work independently when necessary.
  • Basic record-keeping and data entry skills.
  • Fluent in Swahili and English, both written and verbal, for effective communication.
  • Commitment to animal welfare and ethical farming practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or diploma in Agriculture, Animal Science, Livestock Production, or a related field.
  • Experience with different poultry breeds, including broilers, layers, and indigenous chickens.
  • Knowledge of local agricultural regulations and biosecurity guidelines in Zanzibar.
  • Valid motorcycle driving license with a clean record.
