Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Railway Technician specialising in Track & Equipment Maintenance to join a critical team operating in the Worksop, Nottingham area. This essential role is focused on ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of railway infrastructure through meticulous maintenance and repair work. As a Railway Technician, you will be on the front lines, performing routine inspections, diagnosing faults, and executing planned and reactive maintenance tasks on railway tracks, signalling equipment, points, and associated infrastructure. Your work will directly contribute to the seamless operation of one of the nation’s most vital transport networks, helping millions of passengers and crucial freight reach their destinations safely every day.

You will be working outdoors in various weather conditions, often during unsocial hours, to minimise disruption to rail services. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of railway tracks, points, crossings, and associated trackside equipment.
  • Diagnose faults and carry out corrective actions on signalling, telecommunications, and power supply equipment.
  • Utilise specialised tools and machinery for track realignment, sleeper replacement, and ballast maintenance.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols, operational procedures, and work instructions at all times.
  • Complete accurate documentation of all work performed, including inspections, repairs, and material usage.
  • Participate in planned preventative maintenance schedules and respond to emergency call-outs.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering teams and other technicians to ensure project completion and operational continuity.
  • Conduct site surveys and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, health and safety regulations, and environmental policies.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in railway track and/or equipment maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of railway infrastructure and operational procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Proficiency in using a range of hand and power tools relevant to railway maintenance.
  • Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Commitment to health and safety regulations and safe working practices.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in challenging outdoor environments and adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Rail Engineering or equivalent.
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification.
  • Experience with CWR (Continuously Welded Rail) maintenance.
  • Knowledge of signalling systems (e.g., relay interlocking, SSI, interlocking principles).
  • First Aid certification.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., COSS, Lookout, Machine Operator).
  • Apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
