As a Railway Technician, you will be on the frontline, performing essential inspections, preventative maintenance, and reactive repairs on tracks, signalling equipment, points, crossings, and other critical railway assets. Your work will involve detailed fault finding, precision engineering tasks, and the diligent application of safety protocols to maintain the highest standards of rail operation. You will be an integral part of a dedicated team, working both independently and collaboratively to uphold the integrity of the rail infrastructure. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on railway tracks, switches, points, crossings, and associated equipment.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in track infrastructure, signalling systems, and other mechanical or electrical rail components.
  • Operate specialist railway maintenance tools, machinery, and vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere strictly to all railway safety regulations, standards, and operational procedures, including Personal Track Safety (PTS) requirements.
  • Complete detailed reports and documentation for all maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
  • Respond promptly to emergency call-outs and undertake urgent repairs to minimise disruption and ensure operational safety.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other contractors to coordinate work and ensure project completion.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices during all work activities.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance technical skills and knowledge of new technologies.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in railway track and/or equipment maintenance.
  • Relevant technical qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3 in Rail Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of railway safety rules and regulations (e.g., RSSB standards, Network Rail standards).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Proficiency in operating hand and power tools relevant to railway maintenance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including irregular hours and shift work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification.
  • Controller of Site Safety (COSS) or Individual Working Alone (IWA) certification.
  • Full UK Driving License.
  • Experience with specific rail systems such as S&C (Switches & Crossings) or OLE (Overhead Line Equipment).
  • Certification in specific plant or equipment operation (e.g., Road Rail Vehicles, small plant).
  • Advanced first aid qualification.
