Job Description

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to join our dynamic healthcare team in Chimanimani, Manicaland Province. This crucial role can be fulfilled on either a full-time or part-time basis, offering flexibility while maintaining our high standards of patient care. As an RPN, you will be at the forefront of delivering primary healthcare services, health education, and community-based health interventions, contributing significantly to the well-being of individuals and families in the Chimanimani district. Your responsibilities will encompass a broad spectrum of nursing duties, including direct patient care, administering medications, monitoring patient vital signs, assisting with minor procedures, and meticulous record-keeping.

Beyond clinical duties, this role emphasizes a strong community engagement component. You will play a vital part in health promotion campaigns, educating community members on preventive health measures, hygiene practices, maternal and child health, and disease management. Working within the humanitarian framework of the Red Cross, you will encounter diverse health challenges and have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable populations, including those affected by emergencies or chronic health conditions. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, including vital sign monitoring, medication administration, wound care, and basic first aid.
  • Assist medical officers and other healthcare professionals with examinations, procedures, and treatments.
  • Educate patients and their families on health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, ensuring proper documentation of all care provided.
  • Participate in community health outreach programs, including vaccination drives, health screenings, and awareness campaigns.
  • Monitor and manage medical supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper functioning.
  • Adhere strictly to all medical protocols, hygiene standards, and ethical guidelines set by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and national health authorities.
  • Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals, volunteers, and community leaders.
  • Provide compassionate support and care to vulnerable individuals, demonstrating empathy and respect for cultural diversity.
  • Report critical incidents, patient changes, and unusual observations to supervising medical staff promptly.

Required Skills

  • Valid registration as a Practical Nurse with the relevant Zimbabwean regulatory body.
  • Proven clinical nursing skills, including medication administration, wound care, and vital sign assessment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Shona (Ndebele is an added advantage).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Demonstrated empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for record-keeping and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma in Practical Nursing or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a community health setting or humanitarian organization.
  • Familiarity with public health programs and primary healthcare delivery in rural settings.
  • Certification in First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations or in disaster-affected areas.
