Job Description
FirstEnergy Corp. is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Remote Compliance Officer to join our dynamic legal and compliance team. In this critical full-time role, you will be instrumental in ensuring that FirstEnergy’s operations adhere strictly to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and internal policies, particularly within the heavily regulated energy and utilities sector. While this position is primarily remote, candidates should reside within a commutable distance of Akron, Ohio, for occasional on-site meetings, training, or team-building events as needed. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring compliance programs, conducting risk assessments, and providing expert guidance to various business units. This role demands a proactive individual with an in-depth understanding of regulatory frameworks (such as FERC, NERC, state Public Utilities Commissions, environmental regulations, etc.) and a proven track record of effectively managing complex compliance issues. The successful candidate will leverage their strong analytical skills to identify potential compliance risks, propose mitigation strategies, and foster a robust culture of compliance throughout the organization. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance policies and procedures aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular compliance risk assessments, identifying potential areas of vulnerability and developing corrective action plans.
- Monitor changes in relevant laws and regulations, assessing their impact on company operations and ensuring timely adaptation of internal controls.
- Provide expert compliance advice and guidance to various business units, senior management, and employees on regulatory matters.
- Design and deliver effective compliance training programs for employees at all levels, fostering a company-wide culture of ethical conduct and regulatory adherence.
- Oversee and participate in internal investigations related to compliance breaches or ethics violations, ensuring thoroughness and appropriate resolution.
- Prepare and submit necessary compliance reports to regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with internal audit, legal, and operational teams to strengthen the overall control environment.
- Manage and respond to regulatory inquiries, audits, and examinations.
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging risks, and advancements in compliance technology and methodologies.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 60 months (5 years) of progressive experience in a regulatory compliance role, preferably within the energy, utilities, or a similarly regulated industry.
- Strong understanding of federal and state regulatory frameworks (e.g., FERC, NERC, PUCs, environmental laws) relevant to utilities.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with keen attention to detail.
- Proven ability to interpret complex regulations and translate them into actionable policies and procedures.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including presentation abilities for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
- Proficiency in compliance management software and standard office applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or Master's degree in a related field.
- Professional certification such as Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP), Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), or similar.
- Experience with enterprise risk management (ERM) frameworks.
- Project management experience in implementing compliance initiatives.
- Familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., CCPA, GDPR) or cybersecurity compliance standards.
