Econet Wireless is seeking a talented Remote Database Administrator to join our dynamic IT team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute your expertise from the comfort of your home in Mutoko, Mashonaland East Province, while playing a critical role in managing the backbone of our extensive telecommunications infrastructure. As a Remote Database Administrator, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle management of our various database systems, ensuring optimal operation, availability, and reliability. You will work with a diverse set of technologies including SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, and may also engage with cloud-based database solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, patch, and upgrade database software (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL) across various environments.
- Monitor database performance, availability, and security, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
- Implement and maintain robust backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and minimize downtime.
- Develop, test, and maintain disaster recovery plans and high availability solutions.
- Perform database tuning and optimization to enhance query performance and overall system efficiency.
- Manage database security, including user access, roles, and permissions, ensuring compliance with company policies.
- Conduct regular capacity planning to anticipate future storage and performance needs.
- Troubleshoot complex database problems, providing timely resolution and root cause analysis.
- Collaborate with development teams to optimize database schemas, queries, and application performance.
- Document database architecture, procedures, and best practices.
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical database support as needed.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in SQL and Transact-SQL/PL/SQL.
- Extensive experience with at least two major RDBMS platforms (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
- Strong understanding of database performance tuning and optimization techniques.
- Expertise in database backup, recovery, and high availability solutions.
- Solid knowledge of database security principles and implementation.
- Familiarity with operating systems such as Linux/Unix and Windows Server.
- Experience with database monitoring and diagnostic tools.
- Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash) for automation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Professional certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, AWS Certified Database – Specialty).
- Experience with cloud database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
- Previous experience in the telecommunications industry.
- Experience working in a large-scale, high-transactional environment.
