Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and meticulous Remote Technical Editor to join our dynamic team, focusing specifically on software documentation. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness of all user-facing and internal technical documentation for a diverse range of software products. This isn’t just about grammar checks; it’s about deeply understanding complex technical concepts and refining their presentation to empower users and developers alike.

As a Remote Technical Editor, you will collaborate closely with technical writers, software engineers, product managers, and quality assurance teams across different time zones. Your day-to-day will involve reviewing, editing, and enhancing various forms of documentation, including user guides, API references, release notes, online help articles, knowledge base content, and developer documentation. You will ensure adherence to established style guides, terminology glossaries, and brand voice, while also identifying opportunities for structural improvements, logical flow, and overall user experience. We are looking for someone who is not afraid to ask tough questions, challenge assumptions, and advocate for the end-user’s perspective. Your ability to transform dense, technical jargon into clear, concise, and actionable information will be paramount to our success. This is an exceptional opportunity for a detail-oriented professional with a passion for technology and a commitment to editorial excellence to make a significant impact from anywhere.

Key Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread a wide range of software documentation (user guides, API docs, release notes, online help, knowledge base articles) for clarity, accuracy, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and adherence to style guides.
  • Ensure consistent terminology, voice, and tone across all documentation sets.
  • Collaborate with technical writers, engineers, and product managers to clarify technical concepts and ensure factual correctness.
  • Provide constructive feedback to authors, helping them improve their writing skills and align with editorial standards.
  • Develop and maintain internal style guides, glossaries, and editorial checklists.
  • Identify opportunities for structural and organizational improvements in documentation to enhance user experience.
  • Verify the completeness and logical flow of information within documents.
  • Participate in peer reviews and content strategy discussions.
  • Stay current with industry best practices in technical communication and editing tools.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in technical editing, preferably within the software or technology industry.
  • Exceptional command of the English language, including grammar, syntax, punctuation, and style.
  • Proven ability to edit complex technical content for diverse audiences (developers, end-users, administrators).
  • Strong understanding of documentation authoring tools and content management systems (e.g., Markdown, XML, Confluence, Zendesk).
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycles and Agile methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • High level of attention to detail and ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Proficiency with style guides (e.g., Microsoft Manual of Style, Chicago Manual of Style) and the ability to adapt to company-specific guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Journalism, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Familiarity with UX writing principles.
  • Certification in technical editing or professional writing.
  • Experience working with global teams and understanding of localization considerations.

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive salary and performance bonuses.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Flexible remote work environment.
