Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Remote User Researcher to join our dynamic product development team. In this full-time role, you will be instrumental in understanding the needs, behaviors, and motivations of users interacting with Montana’s digital government services. As a Remote User Researcher, you will work collaboratively with product managers, designers, and developers to uncover critical insights that inform product strategy and design decisions. You will plan, conduct, and analyze various user research activities, from foundational studies to usability testing, leveraging both qualitative and quantitative methods. Your work will directly impact the usability, accessibility, and overall success of our digital platforms, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of Montana’s citizens and businesses. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute a wide range of user research studies, including interviews, surveys, usability tests, card sorting, and contextual inquiries, utilizing appropriate methodologies for each project.
  • Recruit and screen participants for research studies, ensuring diverse representation and adherence to ethical guidelines.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify user needs, pain points, mental models, and opportunities for product improvement.
  • Synthesize research findings into clear, concise, and actionable insights, communicating them effectively to cross-functional teams and stakeholders through compelling reports, presentations, and workshops.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, and developers throughout the product development lifecycle to integrate user insights into design and strategy.
  • Develop and maintain research roadmaps, aligning research efforts with overall product goals and priorities.
  • Advocate for user-centered design principles and practices across the organization, fostering a culture of empathy and user understanding.
  • Stay current with industry best practices, tools, and trends in user research and apply them to our processes.
  • Manage research logistics, including scheduling, consent forms, and incentive distribution.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years of professional experience in user research, UX research, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods (e.g., in-depth interviews, usability testing, surveys, A/B testing).
  • Proficiency with user research tools (e.g., UserTesting, Qualtrics, Dovetail, Figma for prototypes).
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple research projects simultaneously in a remote setting.
  • Solid understanding of human-centered design principles and product development processes.
  • Experience with remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Experience working in the government technology sector or on public-facing digital services.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design practices.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS) for advanced quantitative analysis.
  • Portfolio demonstrating a range of user research projects and impact on product development.
