Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Scientist to join our dynamic laboratory team in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. This full-time, on-site role is pivotal to our ongoing commitment to product innovation, process optimization, and quality assurance within our chemical manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, executing, and interpreting complex laboratory experiments focused on various aspects of chemical synthesis, analysis, and application. You will contribute significantly to the development of new chemical products, improvement of existing manufacturing processes, and troubleshooting of technical challenges. This role demands a proactive individual with a strong theoretical background in chemistry or chemical engineering, coupled with extensive practical experience in a laboratory setting. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including production, engineering, and quality control, to translate scientific findings into tangible industrial applications. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and execute laboratory-scale experiments and pilot plant studies related to chemical synthesis, process optimization, and product development.
  • Perform in-depth analytical testing of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products using advanced instrumentation (e.g., Gas Chromatography, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, titrators, rheometers).
  • Interpret complex experimental data, perform statistical analysis, and draw robust scientific conclusions.
  • Develop and validate new analytical methods and procedures to enhance testing capabilities and accuracy.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, scientific presentations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) detailing experimental results, methodologies, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate effectively with production, engineering, quality control, and other R&D teams to implement new processes and resolve technical challenges.
  • Contribute to the identification and evaluation of new raw materials and technologies that can enhance product performance or manufacturing efficiency.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all laboratory safety protocols, quality management systems (e.g., ISO standards), and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal functionality and data integrity.
  • Stay abreast of scientific and technological advancements in the chemical industry and propose innovative research directions.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience in a research and development or industrial setting.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting a range of analytical instruments (e.g., GC, HPLC, FTIR, UV-Vis, viscometers).
  • Demonstrated ability in experimental design (DOE), data analysis, and statistical interpretation.
  • Strong understanding of chemical principles, reaction mechanisms, and process chemistry.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a systematic approach to scientific investigation.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and inter-team collaboration.
  • Proven commitment to laboratory safety and quality assurance practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Experience in the chemical manufacturing industry, particularly with carbide chemistry, specialty chemicals, or similar industrial processes.
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma methodologies or other continuous improvement frameworks.
  • Project management experience, including planning, execution, and reporting on research initiatives.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property processes and patent literature.
