Job Description

We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Research Scientist to join our dynamic R&D team in Sasolburg, Free State. This pivotal role will contribute significantly to the development of novel processes and products within Sasol’s extensive petrochemical and chemical portfolios. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute complex experimental programmes to investigate new chemical processes, catalysts, and product formulations.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of experimental data using advanced analytical techniques and statistical methods.
  • Interpret research findings, draw robust conclusions, and provide actionable recommendations to project teams.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications to disseminate research outcomes.
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, process specialists, and commercial colleagues.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and scientific advancements relevant to Sasol’s strategic objectives.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety, health, and environmental (SHE) policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property through patent applications and trade secrets.
  • Mentor junior scientists and actively participate in knowledge sharing within the R&D community.

Required Skills

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral or industrial research experience in a relevant field (e.g., catalysis, polymers, organic chemistry)
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental design (DoE) and statistical data analysis.
  • Proficiency with various analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, SEM, XRD).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a robust scientific methodology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to laboratory best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in petrochemicals, fuels, or specialty chemicals industries.
  • Familiarity with process development and scale-up challenges.
