Job Description
We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Research Scientist to join our dynamic R&D team in Sasolburg, Free State. This pivotal role will contribute significantly to the development of novel processes and products within Sasol’s extensive petrochemical and chemical portfolios. Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute complex experimental programmes to investigate new chemical processes, catalysts, and product formulations.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of experimental data using advanced analytical techniques and statistical methods.
- Interpret research findings, draw robust conclusions, and provide actionable recommendations to project teams.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications to disseminate research outcomes.
- Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, process specialists, and commercial colleagues.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies and scientific advancements relevant to Sasol’s strategic objectives.
- Adhere strictly to all safety, health, and environmental (SHE) policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the development of intellectual property through patent applications and trade secrets.
- Mentor junior scientists and actively participate in knowledge sharing within the R&D community.
Required Skills
- PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral or industrial research experience in a relevant field (e.g., catalysis, polymers, organic chemistry)
- Demonstrated expertise in experimental design (DoE) and statistical data analysis.
- Proficiency with various analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, SEM, XRD).
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a robust scientific methodology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to laboratory best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in petrochemicals, fuels, or specialty chemicals industries.
- Familiarity with process development and scale-up challenges.
- Track record of scientific publications and/or patent applications.
- Experience with project management principles and practices.
- Knowledge of advanced computational chemistry or modelling techniques.
